I follow the Tony Awards semi-closely, though I've never even traveled north of the Mason-Dixon. It's nice to know that live theater is still celebrated, even if this is the niche-iest awards show of the bunch. How many viewers do you think actually go to New York? Or see plays? From my experience, it's mostly Jewish moms and high school/university theatre geeks that watch -- yet I still remain faithful (although I missed last year's).
Andrew probably hit the nail on the head earlier when he said it's how we feed our awards show addiction. While I don't do this for the Emmys or the Grammys, I can't help but feel that he's right. After all, the theatre of today is the cinema of tomorrow -- or, if you're a musical, vice versa. It's harder to predict, certainly: I watch the movies up for Oscar, and there are precursors to help us whittle down things. The only thing I've got is the Official Eligibility List.
Still, might be fun for a laugh, especially once the actual nominations are announced.
