1997: Beginning

Now that 1990 is wrapped, we can get to 1997.


This is the second part of our look at the years in which Kevin Costner directed a film. Six years after winning the Oscar for Dances with Wolves, he gave us The Postman, another epic about the American soul in the West, this one set in the future. The film was not as successful as its predecessor, and we'll get into that when the time comes. 


This was also the year of Titanic, the box office phenomenon that spent just shy of four months as the #1 movie in the world and became the 50th winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture. We'll talk about the other nominees, the winners, and other films released that year - the ones I watched, anyway - 76 in all:
