In 2020, I saw 119 films. In 2021, 120 films; in 2022, 97 films; and in 2023, 115 films.
This year, I saw a grand total of...74 films.
One of them I have a personal connection to. I highly recommend it.
It's called Empire Waist and it's about a high schooler with dreams of becoming a fashion designer, the pushback she gets for daring to be a bigger girl with dreams, and the support she receives from new friends. One is reminded of Tim Gunn's 2016 comments wherein he mentioned being told by retailers that they don't emphasize plus-size women's clothing because they don't spend as much, to which he responded, "Have you been in your own department for these women? The clothes are hideous. If I were she, I wouldn't shop either." Well, in Empire Waist, the clothes aren't hideous, whether they're for plus-sized girls, disabled girls, tall girls, short girls, all are welcome to look beautiful and feel powerful! Funny, genuine, avoids preachiness, and embraces the mess of reality. It's available now on VOD!
But I am personally connected to it - I wasn't involved in the making of it but many friends were and I saw many different cuts before the final one - so let's say I saw a grand total of 73 films. Except that Carry-On, Road House, and Role Play are all straight-to-streaming films so...let's say I saw only 70 films from 2024. Here are those films:
Alien: Romulus
Anora

I won’t get into all of these in-depth, but remember, this is meant to be the finale of my Kevin Costner Winter, looking at years where he had a directorial effort released. We've covered Dances with Wolves and 1990, The Postman and 1997, Open Range and 2003, and tomorrow we'll look at Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter One.
